龍鳳流の開祖
Founder of Ryuhoryu - Scot Mertz

Ryuhoryu Bujutsu was founded by Scot Mertz in 2005. Over the next 9 years the system went through a lot of changes as more research was conducted to really bring the system into a more complete and well rounded idea. The original idea in 2005 was to have Ryuhoryu be a set of "extra" kata that would complement Gojuryu karate, but as time passed on the system grew outside of just a handful of extra kata and began taking shape as its own thing. The style was first published as a complete curriculum in 2014. However at that time Scot was still heavily into Gojuryu karate and was unable to really focus on teaching the system. More changes were made between 2016-2018, and in 2019 a second curriculum was published, and this time was recognized as a new style of gendai budo by the All Japan Budo Association.

The Ryuhoryu Bujutsu system is a collection of material that is largely Naha-te based, but material that did not make it into any one system, but is spread out throughout Okinawa and taught by several different teachers. These kata and methods were standardized into a unique system that preserves these lesser known practices, so future generations can benefit from this material. Ryuhoryu is both a Karate (empty hand) and Bukijutsu (weaponry) system consisting of 36 total kata (18 empty hand and 18 weapon forms).

Scot's martial arts training began in 1983. His main style is Gojuryu karate, in which he was awarded a 7th Degree Black Belt and Kyoshi license from Toyama Zenshu Hanshi from Awase, Okinawa. In the past Scot was fortunate enough to train with some of the greats, including Yagi Meitoku, Kurashita Eiki, Nitta Seifuku, Toma Seiki, and others whose methods he has retained. In addition to Gojuryu, Scot has trained in Shotokan karate, Shorinryu karate, Ryueiryu Kobudo, and various family and smaller styles (both karate and kobudo) during his time spent living on Okinawa while enlisted in the US Navy.
