UCHINAGUCHI (沖縄口)

Uchinaguchi is the native language of the Ryukyu islands. The Japanese language wasn't really adopted fully to Okinawa until after the fall of the Ryukyu Kingdom in 1879. In recent times there has been a reemergence of this language on Okinawa in hopes to preserve the language before it is completely lost. Many karate schools on Okinawa teach with a mix of both Japanese and Uchinaguchi terms. These are some of the more common terms you may hear that are in Uchinaguchi.
