How to Join or Convert to Ryuhoryu

Are you interested in converting to the Ryuhoryu Bujutsu system? Maybe picking up another course that you can teach at your facility. If so, you have come to the right page. What follows is our policy for individuals interested in learning or even converting to Ryuhoryu Bujutsu. As always if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

The fastest way to begin training or conversion is to contact one of our highly trained instructors from our schedule page. Many of our instructors offer online and in person classes depending on your needs. Class schedules and prices vary from instructor to instructor.

If you are interested in our conversion program, please contact Scot Mertz sensei from the link at the top of this page.

When converting into Ryuhoryu we typically will waive all time in grade requirements up to your previous dan level. However, individuals converting are still required to test for each grade. We don't believe in handouts, so while we will waive time in grade, rank in Ryuhoryu must still be earned.

There are several benefits to training in Ryuhoryu Bujutsu, we take a very practical approach to our training and don't believe in any myths or about secret material. All of our material is freely taught once a student achieves the appropriate level. The bulk of our training does consist of two person drills and various kumites which are designed to maximize learning efficiency, especially in our present and everchanging environments.

While Ryuhoryu Bujutsu is a form of Gendai Budo (modern martial arts), we do maintain many older practices while also incorporating newer ideas into the material to bring it up to date and ensure that it's a bit more practical in our modern world. This mixing of the old and new, which is also largely based on scientific methods including kinesiology and plyometrics, is designed to enhance our student's training. Practical application of all of our techniques are also taught so our students so they will have a higher level of understanding and working knowledge of our techniques, strategies, and method.

In learning Ryuhoryu Bujutsu you will be exposed to several different types of material. These range from classical Okinawan Karate, Okinawan Shima (grappling), classical Kata, a wide variety of weaponry, in addition to Traditional Chinese Medicine training and some medical practices to ensure the safety of our students and staff. All of our instructors are also encouraged to participate in local college classes in various sport and business related topics.

We truly look forward to hearing from you and hope to see you at one of our locations in the very near future. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
