Shima is a form of traditional Ryukyuan martial arts, sometimes called Okinawan sumo. Its history dates back to the Ryukyu Kingdom era, when people would put on wrestling demonstrations at festivals and events around the islands. Although the style declined somewhat after Japan took control in 1872, it has seen a major resurgence in modern times.
